This May, Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) was proud to be recognized by two of our neighborhood partners for our ongoing commitment to a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable Brooklyn. Being honored by Groundswell and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) underscores the power of local collaboration in building stronger communities.
Groundswell 30th Anniversary Gala

On May 7, FAC received the Community Impact Award during Groundswell’s “Spring into Summer” 30th Anniversary Celebration. Held at Penthouse 45 in Manhattan, the evening celebrated three decades of Groundswell’s work in using public art as a tool for social change.
FAC was honored alongside fellow changemakers, including Legacy Award recipient Amy Sananman. For FAC, this award celebrates our shared belief that affordable housing and social justice are deeply intertwined with the vibrant, creative spirit of our youth and local artists. Sarah Batchu, FAC’s Director of Programs, accepted the award, stating, “The Heartbeat of Gowanus, our most recent mural collaboration, is a beautiful example of what this partnership makes possible. It reflects generations of organizing in Gowanus, especially the leadership of women and BIPOC communities in the fight for affordable housing, environmental justice, and equity. But just as important as the mural itself is the process behind it.”
Gowanus Blooms: 20 Years of GCC

The celebrations continued at the Gowanus Blooms gala later that evening, where the Gowanus Canal Conservancy celebrated its 20th anniversary. FAC was recognized as a member of the Gowanus Oversight Taskforce (GOTF) for its groundbreaking model for keeping government accountable and ensuring that the city invests $450 million into public housing, infrastructure, open space and other community benefits for the future of the Gowanus neighborhood.
As Gowanus evolves following the 2021 rezoning, this honor highlights our collective efforts to ensure the community grows equitably, inclusively and sustainably.
“As Gowanus continues to change, this recognition affirms our shared commitment to shaping a neighborhood where growth is equitable, inclusive, and rooted in accountability to the people who call it home, “ said Michelle de la Uz, FAC Executive Director
Thank you to Groundswell and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy for your many decades of partnership and for an incredible month of celebration!
