This summer, Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) hosted two vibrant Summer BBQ Celebrations to meet our neighbors where they are, bringing people together across Sunset Park and Gowanus to connect, celebrate, and build community.
At our Sunset Park BBQ, community members gathered for an energetic afternoon designed to break the ice and foster local connections. Guests mingled over crowd-favorite icebreaker games, including Human Bingo and a lively game of Jeopardy. NYS Senator Andrew Gounardes also joined the festivities, and shared brief remakes thanking FAC for our continued advocacy in the community. The event featured a fantastic live band that kept the energy high, bringing local residents together to enjoy music, food, and neighborhood camaraderie.
In Gowanus, the celebration continued with a dynamic community event powered by a live DJ, and interactive activities centered on civic engagement. We were honored to welcome Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Kim Council (speaking on behalf of Borough President Antonio Reynoso), who thanked FAC Executive Director Michelle de la Uz and the team for being a trusted partner in the community. In her remarks, she highlighted the Borough President’s equity-driven initiatives, including directing capital funding toward maternal health for women of color, leading know-your-rights workshops for immigrant communities, and tackling Brooklyn’s ongoing housing affordability and food insecurity challenges.
Both events offered a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our neighbors, spark meaningful interactions, and reinforce our shared commitment to a strong, connected Brooklyn. Thank you to everyone who joined us, participated in the activities, and helped make this summer’s gatherings such a success!
