As part of the ongoing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund program, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is making progress on the Red Hook Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facility in Gowanus.
This major environmental infrastructure project features a massive underground tank designed to capture and store up to 8 million gallons of combined sewage during heavy rainstorms, preventing it from overflowing into the Gowanus Canal. Once completed, the project will result in a significantly cleaner and healthier canal, topped with 1.6 acres of new public open space for the community to enjoy.
Here is what neighbors need to know about planned activities and schedules for September 2026.
Project & Schedule Details
- Construction Location: Nevins Street between Butler Street and Sackett Street, Gowanus, Brooklyn.
- Dates: September 1, 2026 – September 30, 2026
Standard Work Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 6:00 AM – 12:00 AM (Midnight)
- Saturdays: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Holiday Exclusion: No work will take place on Monday, September 7 (Labor Day).
Key Work Activities Planned for September
During the month of September, site crews will be focusing on the following key construction tasks:
- Delivery and assembly of heavy machinery
- Removal of temporary bracing
- Construction of the Butler Street influent structure
- Construction of the Degraw Street outfall structure
Environmental Monitoring & Safety Controls
DEP remains committed to minimizing disruptions to the surrounding neighborhood and maintaining environmental standards throughout construction:
- Air Monitoring: Air monitoring systems remain active on-site, with results regularly posted to the DEP website. Note that following the completion of all excavation work in coordination with the EPA, the supplemental air sampling program has officially concluded.
- Odor & Dust Mitigation: DEP is conducting frequent, routine odor inspections across the construction site and adjacent residential areas. Contractors utilize a non-toxic odor-neutralizing misting system (primarily water-based) to continuously suppress dust and localized odors.
