Black History Month Film Screening: The Sun Rises in the East

Join us as we celebrate Black History Month! The evening will start with a community iftar (the meal eaten after sunset during Ramadan), followed by the one-hour documentary and ending with a group discussion.
The Sun Rises in The East (2022) is a 58-minute documentary by Tayo and Cynthia Gordy Giwa that chronicles “The East,” a prominent 1970s Black-affirming, pan-African community organization in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. It explores how this group built self-sufficient institutions, including a school, food co-op, and newspaper.
