On May 19th, Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) had the honor of gathering with our partners, honorees, friends, board and staff for our Annual Benefit and Awards Reception. We are profoundly grateful to our sponsors, host committee, and supporters whose leadership helped us raise crucial unrestricted funds. These resources directly fuel our comprehensive programs, supporting New Yorkers in the ongoing fight for economic, social, and racial justice.
Grounding the Night in Community
The evening opened with Host Committee Chairs Sam Marks (FJC, and FAC Board member) and Courtney Horowitz (Strada Ventures), who highlighted FAC’s tangible presence in the neighborhood. Courtney shared a moving reflection on passing FAC’s projects daily:
“I’ve seen the tremendous impact they have—from the beautiful, recently completed shelter-to-permanent housing project on Park Place to the Sunset Park Library I pass while taking my son to birthday parties.”
Executive Director Michelle de la Uz grounded the night in our theme, Build, Power, Transform: Changing Times, Steadfast Values. She reminded us that while inequality can fracture trust, the “We” still triumphs over the “I” when individuals and communities choose to organize for a more just future.
Celebrating Resilience and Advocacy
The room was moved by a soulful rendition of “A Change is Gonna Come” by long-time FAC tenant and musician Edwin Vasquez, setting the stage for our 2026 honorees.
The Power Award, was presented to the 120 5th Avenue Coalition and Advocates, Geto & de Milly, and former NYC Councilmember and Comptroller Brad Lander. Sideya Sherman, Director of NYC Department of City Planning and Chair of the City Planning Commission, presented the award, noting that the Paseo on 5th project is a prime example of the equitable housing NYC needs. Ayana Muhammad, FAC Board Member, accepted on behalf of the coalition. Their work is a powerful testament to a community that refused to be displaced and successfully secured a community oriented grocery store and permanently affordable housing.
The Transform Award, introduced by Charles Rotunno, Senior Program Officer from Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, honored a FAC Adult Education graduate for his incredible dedication to mastering English and building a successful career in cable installation. Former instructor Dee Beasnael accepted on his behalf, celebrating his journey of resilience.
Honoring Our Pillars
We also shared a bittersweet moment celebrating two foundational members of the FAC family entering retirement. We honored Dany Cunningham for his 30 years of service as FAC’s Board Member and former FAC Board Chair; and Zully Rolan for her 18 years of service as FAC’s Director of Asset and Property Management.
With Sincere Gratitude
The night was made special by our generous local partners. A huge thank you to Mil Gustos Hospitality Group’s Bogota Latin Bistro for our signature cocktail, Wild East Brewing Co for the beer and Gowanus Wine Studio & Tasting Table for the delicious wine!
We also thank our raffle donors for adding a festive, interactive spirit to the night, including FAC Board Members Melanie Ash, Arshad Bacchus, and Sam Marks; Host Committee member Antonio Frustaci; and Eric Schwartz, Dave Zackin, Judy’s, Palo Santo, and King County Distillery.
