On February 4, 2026, U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles E. Schumer announced over $26.3 million in federal funding for critical community projects across Brooklyn, including a $3 million commitment to revitalizing the Gowanus neighborhood through our Gowanus Green project.
What is Gowanus Green?
Gowanus Green is not just a building project; it is a vision for a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive future for Brooklyn. FAC, along with its development partners, is transforming a 5.8-acre site along the Gowanus Canal—formerly a manufactured gas plant—into a thriving mixed-use community.
This ambitious development aims to provide:
- 100% affordable housing dedicated to low- and moderate-income seniors and families.
- Community facilities, a new public school, and retail space.
- Public open space
The Impact of Federal Investment
The $3 million in federal funding secured by Senators Gillibrand and Schumer is specifically earmarked to support two critical components of the Gowanus Green project:
- Resilient Green Space
This funding will help develop a new rain garden and public green space that will serve as a vital ecological buffer. The garden will capture and filter water before it enters the sewer system or the Gowanus Canal, helping to reduce local flooding and pollution.
- A Dedicated Community Facility
Federal funds will also support the construction of an 8,700-square-foot community facility, which will be located on the ground floor of an affordable housing building for seniors. This space will act as a hub for residents and the surrounding neighborhood, offering community amenities such as:
- Public benefits eligibility screening and access
- Housing counseling
- Financial literacy education and coaching
- Adult education
Senator Gillbrand stated “With tens of millions of dollars going directly to organizations across the five boroughs, I am proud to be delivering this much-needed federal funding to improve the lives of New Yorkers and to keep New York City flourishing.”
A Healthier, More Sustainable Brooklyn
This project represents a crucial step forward in addressing the dual crises of housing affordability and environmental degradation in New York City.
By investing in Gowanus Green, the federal government is supporting a model of urban development that prioritizes the well-being of residents—particularly seniors—while proactively addressing climate resiliency through smart environmental design.
We look forward to seeing the transformation of the Gowanus waterfront into a vibrant, safe, and sustainable community.
