How NYC’s “Get the Good Stuff” Program Doubles Fresh Produce Budgets for SNAP Recipients

For many families, keeping fresh, nutritious food on the table can be a real budget challenge. To help ease that burden, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene runs Get the Good Stuff—a program designed to help SNAP (food stamp) recipients stretch their food dollars twice as far at local supermarkets.

How the Program Works

The incentive structure is straightforward: dollar-for-dollar matching

  1. Spend on Produce: When you pay for eligible fruits, vegetables, or beans using your SNAP/EBT card, you earn a matching dollar for every $1 spent—up to $10 per day
  1. Earn Rewards: These matching dollars are loaded onto a designated pink card scanned at checkout.
  1. Save Next Time: You can use your earned reward balance toward your next purchase of eligible produce items.

What Foods Are Eligible?

To qualify for the reward match, items must be free of added sugars, salts, or fats. Eligible items include:

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, and culinary herbs
  • Frozen fruits, vegetables, and beans
  • Canned and jarred fruits, vegetables, beans, and lentils
  • Dried beans, lentils, fruits, and vegetables

How to Sign Up

Joining the program is free and doesn’t require a complicated application process:

  • Visit a participating supermarket in NYC (locations are available across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens).
  • Stop by the store’s customer service desk or let the cashier know you’d like to sign up for a pink card before you check out.

By making fresh, plant-based foods more affordable, “Get the Good Stuff” makes it easier for New Yorkers to build healthy habits without overspending.
