Transforming 1024 Fulton: A New Chapter for Clinton Hill

1024 Fulton Street Rendering

We are thrilled to share that Governor Kathy Hochul has officially announced the selection of a non-profit development partnership, including Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) to transform the state-owned site at 1024 Fulton Street in Brooklyn.

Once a Brooklyn Union Gas showroom, the property has sat empty for decades despite several past attempts at redevelopment. Now, following extensive community engagement that began in 2024, this long-underutilized property is set to become a vibrant, 100% affordable housing development that reflects the needs and voices of our community.

The project, a collaboration between Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC), Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, and One Brooklyn Health, will bring much-needed resources to Clinton Hill, including:

  • 125 Permanently Affordable Homes: Ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments, these units will be priced for households earning between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income
  • 27,000-Square-Foot Community Center: An intergenerational space operated by the Fort Greene Council, with programming for older adults and early childhood education.
  • Health Clinic: A dedicated facility run by One Brooklyn Health to ensure essential medical services are accessible right in the neighborhood.

This $111 million investment is a prime example of “community-driven development,” prioritizing people and long-term stability over profit.

Michelle de la Uz, Executive Director of Fifth Avenue Committee, highlighted the significance of the partnership:

“1024 Fulton Street represents what’s possible when community vision, public leadership, and mission-driven partners come together. In collaboration with our nonprofit and MWBE partners, Fifth Avenue Committee is transforming a long-idle site into more than 125 affordable homes and a hub for essential services that will support families, seniors, and workers for generations. Thanks to Governor Kathy Hochul’s leadership and steadfast local advocacy, 1024 Fulton Street will stand as a lasting investment in equity, opportunity, health, and community.”

The next steps involve a public review process and the demolition of the existing three-story building. We look forward to seeing this site evolve into a cornerstone of equity and opportunity for our neighbors.
