Community Services at FAC creates an equitable NYC by ensuring economic mobility in New York City by connecting more than a thousand low- and moderate-income New Yorkers with benefits and supports each year. In addition to helping individuals and families secure public benefits and entitlements and health insurance, the program offers free financial and legal counseling and tax preparation assistance.
One of the first Robin Hood Benefits Access and Assistance sites (formerly Single Stop) in the city, FAC’s Community Services program screens more than 1,000 people annually, connecting those who are eligible with public benefits and entitlements, such as low-cost and no-cost health insurance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), SCRIE and DRIE and other benefits to support family and housing stability. Community Services also offers other services that support a family’s mobility from poverty such as financial and legal counseling, and tax preparation assistance, all free of charge.
Community Services Participant
FAC’s Community Services partners with the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) to offer financial counseling, Brooklyn Legal Services for legal advice, and Grow Brooklyn for tax preparation services. We are home to one of Local Initiatives Support Corporation’s (LISC) Financial Opportunity Centers (FOC), which provides ongoing one-on-one financial education and coaching to low-income individuals. Our FOC coach helps participants build their net worth, improve their credit score, and set and advance toward financial goals.
As a comprehensive community development corporation, FAC strives to ensure that the community residents we serve in our other programs (i.e., adult education classes, employment assistance/job supports, foreclosure prevention counseling, organizing and advocacy programs, and residents of FAC-managed housing) are also connected to these vital, poverty-fighting services with Community Services.
