Tenant Counseling, Advocacy and Organizing

Tenant counseling, advocacy, and organizing at NHN educate tenants about their rights, help them obtain necessary home repairs, combat rent overcharges and landlord harassment, apply for rental subsidies, and avoid eviction. This program provides bilingual English/Spanish one-on-one tenant counseling, tenant rights workshops, and legal clinics.

Brooklyn Tenants United is a coalition of Park Slope and Sunset Park tenants, organizing for tenant rights.

NHN rallies around tenants’ right to gas, heating and repairs.

NHN also helps tenants connect their personal experiences to larger community issues and economic forces. Tenant organizers engage residents in city and statewide housing rights campaigns, and organize tenant associations to help tenants learn their rights, and organize to fight predatory landlords, win better housing conditions, and preserve housing affordability. We also organize Brooklyn Tenants United (BTU), a group of South Brooklyn tenants who meet regularly to share their stories, learn about their rights, and work together to preserve affordable housing and strengthen the community. BTU participants are mostly low-income, immigrant, and predominantly Latina women who live in Sunset Park and Park Slope. NHN develops their leadership skills and offers them opportunities to participate in a variety of housing justice campaigns.
